Government Reports Rs 5.52 Lakh Crore Cost Overrun in 1,702 Infrastructure Projects

As of January 2026, 1,702 central sector infrastructure projects valued at Rs 150 crore or more have a revised cumulative cost of Rs 39.25 lakh crore, reflecting a cost overrun of Rs 5.52 lakh crore from original estimates. These projects, monitored via the PAIMANA portal across 17 ministries, include 695 mega projects and 1,007 major projects. The transport logistics sector leads with 1,180 ongoing projects. About 38% of projects have achieved over 80% physical progress, indicating advanced implementation stages, with cumulative expenditure at Rs 20.02 lakh crore.
