TRAI Proposes Stricter Rules and AI Use to Curb Spam Calls and Messages

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has proposed amendments to strengthen regulations against spam calls and messages. Key measures include imposing a 5 paise per minute termination charge on operators originating robocalls outside designated series, lowering the complaint threshold for action based on AI spam detection from five to three, and formally recognizing AI tools for spam filtering. The proposals also target unregistered telemarketers, misuse of SMS headers, and extend regulatory compliance to call management apps, aiming to enhance consumer protection amid evolving spam tactics.
