
India's rooftop solar adoption is growing under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which aims to install one crore systems by 2026-27. As of early 2026, 2.5 million homes are solarised, below the initial target of 10 million. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy reported 14.62 lakh installations in FY26 against a 35 lakh target, with plans to install 39 lakh systems (11,700 MW) in FY27. Challenges include an unorganised installer market and energy security concerns amid geopolitical tensions.
