The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that 98.41% of the Rs 2000 banknotes, initially valued at Rs 3.56 lakh crore, have been returned since their withdrawal announcement on May 19, 2023. As of December 31, 2025, only Rs 5,669 crore remains in circulation. Facilities for deposit and exchange were available at bank branches until October 7, 2023, and continue through RBI Issue Offices and India Post.
