
Indian Railways transported 137.72 million tonnes of freight in February 2026, marking a 3.96–4 percent year-on-year increase, with freight revenue rising nearly 3 percent to Rs 14,572 crore. Net Tonne Kilometres (NTKM), a key freight movement indicator, grew 4.18 percent to 76,007 million. Growth was driven by core commodities including coal, iron ore, finished steel, fertilisers, cement, and container traffic. For the first 11 months of FY26, freight loading rose 3.3 percent to 1,503.8 million tonnes, with revenues reaching Rs 1.61 lakh crore. The Railways aims to carry 1,700 million tonnes in FY26, supported by capacity enhancements and infrastructure projects.
