Thousands of Indian taxpayers received emails before year-end stating their income tax returns and refunds are on hold. The Income Tax Department cited inconsistencies between claimed deductions/exemptions and Form 16 data, or issues with Section 80G donations. These issues include incorrect charity PANs, unregistered organizations, or disproportionately high deductions. Many taxpayers maintain their filings are accurate, causing anxiety as the December 31 deadline approaches.
