India Advances Battery Supply Chain Localization and Considers Mandates for Energy Storage

India is advancing efforts to develop a domestic battery supply chain amid concerns over reliance on China. Altmin, in partnership with the government’s ARCI, is scaling up cathode production and plans a lithium refinery in Telangana. Concurrently, the government is considering mandatory localization rules requiring at least 50% domestic content in battery storage systems for wind, solar, and standalone projects, excluding cells. Industry consultations are ongoing, with no final decisions yet, aiming to boost local manufacturing while balancing costs during the energy transition.
