Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched Bharat Taxi, India's first government-backed cooperative ride-hailing platform, on February 5 in Delhi. The platform allows drivers to become co-owners by investing Rs 500, sharing profits after an initial three-year period. Bharat Taxi aims to return 80% of profits to drivers based on kilometres driven, with 20% retained as cooperative capital. Shah emphasized a minimum base rate per kilometre and drew parallels with the Amul cooperative model. The service plans to expand to all cities with municipal corporations within three years, prioritizing driver welfare and ownership over profit maximization.
