India's Metro Rail Network Expands to Third Largest Globally with Increased Ridership

India's metro rail network has rapidly expanded from 248 km in 2014 to over 1,143 km across 26 cities by 2025, making it the third largest globally. Delhi Metro remains the largest system in India, covering 416 km with 303 stations and recording 2.35 billion passenger journeys in 2025. This growth has improved urban mobility, reduced transport costs, eased congestion, and supported economic and social benefits, with government investment rising significantly to enhance infrastructure and services.
