India is prioritizing the development of an indigenous 900 MWe Light Water Reactor (LWR) to integrate its nuclear sector with the global market, where LWRs dominate. This effort, led by the Department of Atomic Energy since 2015, aims to boost private sector participation and enhance export potential. The recent SHANTI Act, 2025, facilitates imported LWR projects, complementing India's existing heavy water reactor expertise and supporting its broader nuclear energy goals.
