Rising memory chip costs are expected to cause the largest decline in global smartphone shipments in over a decade, with a projected 12.9% drop to 1.12 billion units in 2026, according to IDC. PC shipments are also forecast to fall due to surging DRAM and SSD prices, which will increase device costs and delay upgrade cycles. Low-end devices, especially entry-level smartphones and PCs, face significant challenges, while premium brands like Apple and Samsung may gain market share. Recovery is anticipated from 2027 onward but the market may not return to previous levels.
