The number of foreign banks operating in India through branches or wholly-owned subsidiaries decreased to 44 by March 2025, with one bank exiting during the year, according to an RBI report. This reduction reflects foreign banks' global business strategy realignments and business value optimization. Concurrently, Indian banks are maintaining or expanding their overseas presence. The total number of foreign bank branches in India also saw a slight decrease to 755 from 780 a year prior.
