RBI Reports 98.44% Return of Withdrawn Rs 2,000 Banknotes Since May 2023

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that 98.44% of Rs 2,000 banknotes withdrawn since May 19, 2023, have been returned. The total value of these notes in circulation dropped from Rs 3.56 lakh crore to Rs 5,551 crore by February 28, 2026. RBI continues to accept exchanges and deposits at its 19 issue offices and via India Post. Despite withdrawal, Rs 2,000 notes remain legal tender.
