Researchers at CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL) have developed an indigenous technology to produce dimethyl ether (DME), a synthetic fuel proposed as a cleaner alternative to LPG amid supply disruptions and price volatility linked to global tensions. The patent-protected process uses a locally developed catalyst to convert methanol to DME efficiently. CSIR-NCL plans to scale up production to an industrial demonstration plant within 6-9 months and is exploring partnerships for commercial-scale manufacturing. DME can be used with existing LPG infrastructure or specialized stoves and offers environmental benefits with lower emissions and comparable thermal efficiency. The Bureau of Indian Standards has approved blending DME with LPG up to 20%, supporting its potential role in enhancing India’s energy security and reducing import dependence.
