Indian Telecom Operators Propose Higher International Call Rates to Combat Spam

Indian telecom operators are advocating for an increase in international call termination charges (ITCs) to combat spam and fraudulent calls. They currently receive significantly less for incoming international calls (up to Rs 0.65/minute) than they pay for outgoing calls (Rs 2-19/minute). Industry bodies like COAI and companies such as Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea propose raising the ITC to around Rs 4-4.5 per minute. They argue this would curb spam arbitrage, deter fraudsters, and create reciprocity with global rates, which are substantially higher.
