The Indian food ministry has approved an additional sugar export quota of 87,587 tonnes for the 2025-26 marketing year, following requests from sugar mills. Earlier, 1.5 million tonnes were permitted, with an extra 500,000 tonnes allocated in February on a non-swappable basis. Only 87,587 tonnes of this additional quota were requested and approved, with the remainder lapsing. Mills must export at least 70% of their quota by June 30, 2026, to ship the balance by September 30, or face deductions in future quotas. Extensions are allowed only in force majeure cases.
