Himachal IVF Lab Advances Genetic Improvement in Jersey Cattle Through Biotechnology

The State IVF Laboratory in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, has advanced genetic improvement in Jersey cattle using in vitro fertilization (IVF) and surrogacy. Since January 2025, the lab has transferred around 45 embryos and confirmed ten pregnancies, resulting in the birth of three high-genetic-merit calves from one elite Jersey cow within a year. This technology aims to accelerate genetic gain, conserve superior breeds, enhance milk productivity, and increase farmers' income, according to Dr. Ajay Choudhary, Joint Director of Animal Husbandry.
