India's power sector achieved significant growth by 2025-26, meeting a peak demand of 242.49 GW with minimal shortages. Installed capacity more than doubled since 2014, reaching over 509 GW, with renewables comprising a substantial share, including 178 GW added since 2014. Coal capacity also expanded to support demand. Electricity access and reliability improved notably in rural and urban areas. The government plans to further increase renewable capacity to 500 GW by 2030, add 105 GW thermal capacity by 2035, and expand nuclear power to 100 GW by 2047, balancing energy needs with climate goals.
