The Indian government has expanded mandatory gold hallmarking to 380 districts to enhance consumer protection by ensuring the purity of gold jewellery. This policy shift extends beyond metropolitan areas to smaller regional centers where gold trade has increased. Hallmarking, regulated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), requires jewellers to register and submit items to accredited assay centres for testing and certification, helping prevent the sale of forged gold products and safeguarding buyers.
