The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has clarified that only beverages derived from the Camellia sinensis plant can be legally labelled as 'tea' in India. This includes black, green, and white tea, differing only in processing. Herbal infusions made from flowers, herbs, or fruits will no longer be permitted to use the term 'tea,' as this is considered misbranding. Food businesses and e-commerce platforms have been directed to cease using 'tea' for non-Camellia sinensis products, which should instead be classified as proprietary or non-specified foods.
