India will sign the proposed trade deal with the United States only after Washington finalises a new global tariff architecture, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said. The deal, initially expected to be signed in March, has been delayed following a US Supreme Court ruling that invalidated President Trump's tariff policy under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The US has since imposed a temporary 10 percent tariff under Section 122, and is working to establish a revised tariff framework. India and the US continue negotiations on the agreement's details, including tariffs and non-tariff barriers, with India seeking to retain a preferential tariff rate of around 18 percent. Ongoing US trade investigations and geopolitical factors have also contributed to the delay.
