Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced plans for Southern Railway to double train capacity in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Kochi by 2030. The upgrades include expanding coaching terminals, adding platforms, stabling lines, and maintenance facilities to meet rising passenger demand and reduce congestion. Specific projects include the redevelopment of Chennai Egmore and Tambaram stations, a new Perambur terminal, and enhancements at Podanur Junction in Coimbatore. Ernakulam Town station in Kochi will also undergo phased redevelopment.
