New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is phasing out the MetroCard by December 31, 2025, fully transitioning to the OMNY contactless payment system. OMNY, introduced in 2019, allows riders to tap credit cards, phones, or smart devices for fares, with over 90% of trips already using the system. For those hesitant about digital payments, reloadable OMNY cards are available. The transition aims to save $20 million annually and includes fare capping after 12 rides within a week, equivalent to a $35 weekly pass.
