Surajkund Mela Swing Collapse Kills Inspector, Injures 13; FIR Filed, Probe Underway

At the Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad, a giant 'Tsunami' swing collapsed around 6:15 pm on February 7, injuring at least 13 people and killing Inspector Jagdish Prasad, who was trying to rescue trapped riders. The swing, carrying about 19-26 people, malfunctioned when one supporting pillar failed, causing the structure to tilt and crash. Earlier, a gate at the fair also collapsed, injuring two visitors. Authorities have registered an FIR against the ride operator and staff for culpable homicide, formed a Special Investigation Team, and ordered a safety audit. The fair continues with the swing area closed, while the inspector is being honored for his bravery and will be accorded martyr status.
