The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has uncovered a banking fraud totaling over Rs 6,200 crore, allegedly orchestrated by Kolkata-based businessman Sanjay Sureka. The ED claims Sureka used a network of 60 shell firms to create a fraudulent turnover, obtaining loans from a consortium of PSU banks between 2007 and 2010. The agency alleges that SK Goel, the then CMD of UCO Bank, facilitated these loans, with benefits reportedly channeled through shell corporations for his personal gain. The ED noted that the liquidation value of the company was significantly less than the loan amount.
