A 38-year-old Trinamool Youth Congress vice-president, Nabendu Ghosh, was shot and killed near his home in Raiganj, North Dinajpur, during a New Year's Eve picnic. He was struck in the chest by a bullet and later declared dead at a hospital. Police have arrested two individuals and are reviewing CCTV footage. Ghosh had a background in student politics and had recently joined the Trinamool party. His supporters protested at the hospital, demanding action.
