A couple, identified as Gardi Birowa (43) and Mira Birowa (33), were burnt alive in their house in Assam's Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday night. Villagers accused them of practicing witchcraft and causing ill effects. Police reported that the couple was first attacked with sharp weapons before their house was set on fire. Officials have reached the site to investigate and apprehend those responsible, noting that superstition and belief in rumors persist in the area, despite witch hunting being a crime in the state.
