Sharveen Chetty, a 48-year-old Malaysian man of Indian origin, was sentenced in Singapore to 12 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane for raping a 35-year-old Indonesian domestic worker near Little India MRT station in July 2022. Chetty pleaded guilty to one rape charge and admitted to impersonating a police officer to lure the victim away. The court considered the victim's foreign status an aggravating factor and rejected claims that the assault was not premeditated. Two additional charges were taken into account during sentencing.
