A 42-year-old Thane resident lost ₹5 lakh after installing a fake bank application (APK file) sent via WhatsApp. The message, impersonating his bank, instructed him to install the file for an app update. After installation, scammers transferred the money in two transactions. Police have registered a case under the Information Technology Act and cautioned citizens against downloading suspicious APK files.
