A Tripura student, Anjel Chakma, died in Dehradun after a physical altercation on December 9. While police state the incident stemmed from an argument over 'banter' and found no evidence of racial abuse, the victim's family and some groups allege racial slurs were used. A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking action against racial violence. The Uttarakhand government has assured stringent action against the culprits, and both state governments have provided financial assistance to the family. Five of the six accused have been arrested.
