A Baramulla woman, Shameema Begum, has had her culpable homicide case closed after 46 years. Arrested in 1979 for causing injuries that led to her husband's grandmother's death, she was convicted of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in 2009. The High Court, citing the prolonged legal process, the accused's age, and the offense occurring in a heat of passion, commuted her sentence to the time already served plus a fine, releasing the 70-year-old woman.
