The Maharashtra government opposed gangster Abu Salem's plea for 14 days of parole following his elder brother's death, submitting an affidavit to the Bombay High Court warning he may abscond if granted parole. The affidavit cited Salem's past escape in 1993 and India's obligation to honor extradition conditions with Portugal, from where Salem was brought in 2005. The CBI, prosecuting agency in Salem's cases, sought to be added as a respondent, cautioning that parole could cause law and order issues. The court will hear the plea on January 28.
