
A migrant worker from West Bengal, Juel Sheikh, was beaten to death in Sambalpur, Odisha, after an altercation that began with a demand for a bidi. While police state the incident stemmed from a dispute over the cigarette and that the victim knew the accused, co-workers and the victim's family allege the attack was motivated by suspicion of being Bangladeshi immigrants and demands for Aadhaar cards. Six individuals have been arrested in connection with the death. The incident has drawn political condemnation, with the TMC blaming the BJP for a hostile narrative against Bengalis.
