Professor Nalini Joshi, an Indian-origin mathematician from the University of Sydney, has been named the 2025 New South Wales Scientist of the Year. She is the first mathematician to receive this prestigious award, which recognizes her pioneering work in integrable systems and their applications in fields like climate science, fibre optics, and quantum cryptography. The award highlights the crucial role of mathematics in addressing contemporary scientific and technological challenges, including cybersecurity threats posed by quantum computing. Joshi's extensive accolades also include the Eureka Prize for Outstanding Mentorship and being an Officer of the Order of Australia.
