A recent study published in the Indian Journal of History of Science suggests ancient Indian scholars may have understood and utilized mineral acids centuries before their documented use in the Arab world or Europe. Researchers examined classical Indian texts predating the 8th century CE, identifying detailed chemical processes involving substances known to generate strong acids. This challenges the long-held belief that Arab alchemists were the first to develop mineral acids after the 9th century CE.
