The Uttar Pradesh government has mandated daily newspaper reading in all state-run secondary and basic primary schools. This initiative, effective from December 23, allocates at least 10 minutes during morning assemblies for students to read and discuss news. The program aims to foster a stronger reading culture, improve vocabulary, critical thinking, and general knowledge, while also reducing excessive screen time and sensitizing students against fake news. Schools will provide Hindi and English newspapers, and additional activities like 'word of the day' and news cuttings are encouraged.
