New York City celebrated the arrival of 2026 with the traditional Times Square Ball Drop. Crowds gathered to witness the 700-pound, 5-foot-diameter ball, adorned with 100 light bulbs, descend. This iconic event, which began in 1907, marks the start of the new year and precedes upcoming celebrations for the United States' 250th birthday. The ball drop has only been skipped twice, during World War II due to a wartime dimout.
