Artist Tom Vattakuzhy has rejected allegations that his painting at the Kochi Biennale distorts Christ's Last Supper, stating it was inspired by a play and humanism, not intended to hurt religious sentiments. Christian groups, including the Syro-Malabar Church, have raised objections, viewing the artwork as disrespectful to their faith. The Biennale authorities temporarily closed the venue following protests. Vattakuzhy explained he sees Christ in those who suffer, a theme reflected in his work, and noted the artwork had previously faced similar objections when published in a magazine.
