Vijayanagara-era Gold Coins Unearthed in Tirupattur Farmland

Eighty-six gold coins from the Vijayanagara era were discovered in an iron pot by workers leveling farmland near Jolarpet, Tirupattur. The farmer, R. Athavan, initially hesitated but eventually handed over the coins to officials. Archaeologists from the Tamil Nadu State Archaeology Department will assess the heritage value before the coins are transferred to the district treasury, as per the Indian Treasure Trove Act, 1878, which designates treasures found buried as government property.
