Cindy McCain to Step Down as UN World Food Programme Executive Director for Health Reasons

Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme since 2023, announced she will step down in three months to focus on her health following a mild stroke in October 2025. After recovering in Arizona, she resumed duties in Rome earlier this year. Her departure opens the way for the U.S., the WFP's largest donor, to propose a successor to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
