Kashmir is experiencing intensified cold conditions during the ongoing 40-day harsh winter period, Chillai Kalan, with minimum temperatures dropping below freezing across the valley. Sonamarg recorded the lowest temperature at minus 8.9°C. The Meteorological Department forecasts spells of wet weather, including light to moderate snow and rain, especially in higher reaches between January 19 and 25. A significant rainfall deficit of 96% in early January raises concerns for agriculture and horticulture, with hopes pinned on upcoming western disturbances bringing precipitation.
