An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 struck Afghanistan on January 1, 2026, at a depth of 113 km, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). This follows several other tremors in the region in late December. Afghanistan, situated in a highly active seismic zone along the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, frequently experiences earthquakes. A more powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake in November killed at least 27 people and injured hundreds.
