A massive pile-up involving over 50 vehicles occurred on Japan's Kan-etsu Expressway during heavy snowfall on December 26, 2025. The incident, which began with a collision between two trucks, resulted in one fatality and 26 injuries, five serious. A fire also erupted, engulfing more than a dozen vehicles. The snowy conditions made braking difficult for drivers, contributing to the chain reaction. The expressway was partially closed for investigations and cleanup as the holiday travel season commenced.
