Calcutta experienced its coldest year-end in over a decade, with average maximum temperatures in the last two weeks of December falling three degrees below normal. The mean maximum temperature for December was the lowest in ten years, frequently dropping below 24 degrees Celsius and even below 20 degrees on some days. This significant chill was attributed to persistent fog, low-level clouds obscuring the sun, and prevailing easterly winds, with northwesterly winds further lowering temperatures to 11 degrees Celsius on the final day of the year.
