ISRO scientists have identified the cause of the August 5, 2025, flash flood in Uttarkashi's Dharali village as the sudden collapse of a large ice patch on the Srikanta Glacier, rather than a cloudburst or glacial lake outburst flood. The ice mass, located in a high-altitude nivation zone, fell about 1,700 meters, triggering a rapid flow of water, mud, and debris that devastated the village. Rainfall before the event was light to moderate, ruling out heavy precipitation as the trigger.
