A 77-year-old woman went overboard from the Holland America cruise ship Nieuw Statendam near Cuba on New Year's Day. The US Coast Guard conducted an eight-hour search covering approximately 690 square miles before suspending efforts. Holland America Line stated its family assistance team is supporting the woman's family. The cruise ship, en route from Fort Lauderdale, cancelled its stop in Key West due to the incident. Overboard incidents on cruise ships are frequently fatal, with a low survival rate reported in recent years.
