Contrary to popular belief, ancient Egyptians and Etruscans did not use gold wires and catgut for braces to straighten teeth. Archaeological evidence suggests these gold bands, often found with women's remains, were likely used as dental prostheses to stabilize loose teeth or hold replacements, functioning as splints rather than orthodontic devices. The softness of pure gold also makes it unsuitable for the continuous pressure required for straightening teeth.
