Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), also called "silent reflux," is a condition where stomach acid rises into the esophagus and can affect the voice and throat. Unlike typical acid reflux, LPR may not cause heartburn but can irritate the voice box, throat, and sinuses. Doctors report that over half of individuals with chronic hoarseness may have LPR, with about 10% of throat specialist visits diagnosed with the condition.
