Eri silk, also known as ahimsa or non-violent silk, is a significant product of Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, with Assam being the largest producer. This silk, derived from the Samia ricini silkworm feeding on castor plants, is unique because the moth completes its metamorphosis before the cocoon is harvested, aligning with sustainable practices. The production process involves a six-week cycle from egg to cocoon, yielding short filament segments. Eri pupae are also consumed as food in the region, and the silkworm can be reared multiple times a year.
