The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has classified malnutrition-related diabetes mellitus (MRDM) as Type 5 diabetes, a distinct form linked to chronic undernutrition and health disparities, primarily affecting low- and middle-income countries. This recognition aims to address an overlooked condition and advance health equity. Symptoms can overlap with undernutrition, including increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, and underweight (BMI < 18.5). Unlike Type 1 diabetes, Type 5 has a lower risk of ketosis due to underdeveloped, not destroyed, pancreatic cells.
